Are you tired of the same old wedding clichés? Do you want your special day to stand out and be remembered for its unique flair and personalized touches? Look no further! I’ve gathered a collection of out-of-the-box wedding ideas that will make your celebration truly unforgettable.
I’ve shot over 300 weddings, and seen a lot of different ideas at weddings. I’ve compiled a list of different unique wedding ideas below that stand out in memory. Not all of these may be your proverbial cup of tea, and they’re not a reflection of my individual tastes for wedding ideas and decor.
1. Magical Moments with Magicians:
Why not add a touch of enchantment to your wedding with a roaming magician? Imagine your guests’ delight as they’re entertained with mind-bending tricks and illusions throughout the evening. What I love about magicians is they add a lot of energy to the festivities, and the best are great entertainers as well as proper wizards!
2. Serenaded by Singing Waiters:
Turn your reception into a performance with singing waiters who surprise and serenade your guests with their melodious voices. It’s a guaranteed way to get everyone on their feet and create an atmosphere of joy and celebration. I’ve seen a few in my time, and one even had an elaborate skit where they dropped a dummy wedding cake (much to the guests initial shock) to kick off the performance. There’s a lot of audience participation too, perfect if you want everyone on their feet, dancing and singing!
3. Cocktail Hour Extravaganza:
A wedding I went to recently used the downtime between the wedding breakfast and the first dance to serve cocktails in the Old Library at Wotton House in Dorking. Add a touch of sophisticated boozing with a selection of signature drinks and maybe even get guests involved in mixing their own (sensibly). Let your guests become their own bartenders and create custom cocktails to toast to your love. The bride and groom and also hired an acoustic guitar duo to provide some ambience whilst guests mingled and sipped Pina Coladas and Espresso Martinis!
4. Quirky Bouquet Jam Jars:
Ditch the traditional bouquet vase and opt for charming jam jars instead. Fill them with wildflowers or your favorite blooms for a rustic yet whimsical touch. This is cheap and easy, but also requires lots of forward planning (aka jam eating), so start saving those leftover jam jars, maybe grab some hessian strips, or straw string and you can create some DIY decor!
5. Handmade Bears:
At another wedding I came across a very unique wedding idea if you’re looking for a keepsake of gift for someone. Sew Flossie provided hand made special memory bears for this wedding in honour of a loved one who had passed on. The materials can be provided by you as well, so you can use one of their old garments for that additional personal touch (I think the couple had used the persons wedding dress for part of the fabric in these bears).
It’s a sweet memento that will remind you of the person, but also remind you of the special day that led to the bear being made. I loved this so much that I bought one myself for our son, to commemorate his Grandpa who is sadly no longer with us.
6. Engagement Photos Around the Venue:
I’m very flattered when I see printed photographs from the engagement shoot framed and included in the menu decor. Some folks to a photo wall of hundreds of shots from their lives up to this point around the venue, which looks great and of course is a real conversation starter for all the guests as they peruse the shared memories they have with you both.
7. Games Galore at the Reception:
Lawn games such as giant jenga or croquet are always good for drinks receptions, and are hardly unique wedding ideas, but I’ve seen some great weddings where people have taken the games a step further.
Unofficial Cornhole World Cup
During the pandemic, weddings were very restricted, but a wedding of up to 15 people was permitted, although there was to be no dancing the night away back then. So instead, the couple hosted an unofficial Cornhole World Cup between guests, complete with knockout rounds to crown their champion. The groom won, but it might have had something to do with the fact that he was a primary school PE teacher…
Rounders
I loved shooting a game of rounders for wedding guests at a wedding in Sussex at Boxgrove Priory. With the village hall opposite for their wedding reception, it was hard to resist the idea of using the village recreation ground for a bit of rounders. It’s a great way to break the ice and get everyone involved in the festivities, and of course, everyone knows the rules!
8. (First) Dance the Night Away:
This isn’t one of our unique wedding ideas, but it’s worth a mention. Your first dance – it makes a huge difference if the couple have had a bit of practice. Whether you’re mastering a new dance style or taking lessons together, impress your guests with a choreographed dance that showcases your love and chemistry – it also really livens up the dance floor, so if you want guests on the dance floor all night, it’s best to lead by example!
9. Personalised Ring Boxes:
Make your ring exchange even more special with personalised ring boxes engraved with your names or a meaningful message. It’s a small detail that adds a big dose of sentimentality. But one of the most unique wedding ideas I’ve come across was presenting them in a book! Below, our couple had a copy of Gulliver’s travels that was sentimental to them, so they had carved into the book a soft pad to place the rings in!
10. Sparklers for a Spectacular Exit:
Ok, so this isn’t one of the unique wedding ideas, but it only happens every so often for me as you need it to be dark in order to get a sparklers photo! End your night with a bang by handing out sparklers for a dazzling send-off. My top tip is to ensure you have some really high quality lighters, or better yet large candles, so guests can light them all at the same time (otherwise the photo doesn’t really work!) It’s a magical way to close the festivities and start your journey as a married couple, and fireworks are also great too!
