A wedding at Firle Place at the foot of the South Downs, we had some mixed weather for Robert & Anna-Karin’s marriage at St Peter’s Church in the ancient village. We were lucky to begin with after the ceremony and got a few photographs around the Church after throwing some confetti.

After shooting the group photographs on the lawn of Firle Place, it began to rain. The wedding reception building was adorned with a blanket of fairy lights on the ceiling, which was useful for an indoor wedding portrait and a wide aperture to blur the lights in this pattern.

I love trying rain wedding photos, and it’s always quite a challenge! This was taken using multiple flashes behind Robert & Anna-Karin, and we had a few goes getting the umbrella in exactly the right position for the shot. A puddle in the road also made for a great reflection shot to add another compositional dimension to these shots.

Just as golden hour would have begun, we still didn’t quite get the weather we may have liked, but we did get a break in the clouds to explore the grounds of Firle Place and catch a little bit of dramatic light breaking through the clouds at the end of the day. We also had some moody rain clouds still moving over the hills and got a couple of shots amongst the sheep, looking back towards the Church and the South Downs near Firle Beacon.
